Replace Your Air Filters
The simplest home maintenance you can do begins with replacing your air filters, which ideally should be done every few months OR before periods of increased AC usage.
When AC filters become clogged with dust and dirt, they:
- Reduce your AC performance
- Reduce your indoor air quality
- Increase cooling system strain
- Raise your energy bills
Fortunately, filters can be replaced easily. Your AC filter is usually located in the return vent or air handler. Just be sure that when switching out filters, the replacement’s size and MERV rating are compatible with your air conditioning unit.
Clean Outdoor Unit
If you have a split heating and cooling system, you probably have an outdoor air conditioning unit.
Make sure to:
- Keep the grass around the base of the unit short
- Remove vegetation and weeds
- Periodically hose down your outdoor unit to clean dust/dirt off
If you rinse your AC unit, make sure you turn the POWER OFF FIRST. Let the unit dry for at least a few hours before using your AC again.
Check Thermostat Settings
The best way to maintain a consistent temperature in your home during the summer is to keep your thermostat at a set temperature.
During the summer, the ideal thermostat temperature is around 72 degrees.
During the winter, the ideal setting is about 68 degrees.
You can also invest in a programmable or smart thermostat for more energy savings! Oh, and pro tip: It costs less to keep your HVAC system on during the day rather than turning it on and off when you need it.
Insulate Your Home
You can also prepare your home for the season by replacing your insulation. Insulation in your attic and walls stops cool air leakage, so your AC won’t have to work as hard to keep your home at a consistent and cool temperature.
Schedule an AC Inspection
The best way to get your HVAC system in shape for the season is by scheduling maintenance and an inspection.
During a routine maintenance checkup, an HVAC technician will clean and inspect your system, make tune-ups to improve performance, and inspect your system components to identify potential repair issues.
